In Washington With My Love

Posted by in on 20-8-13

Draw me close, Amanda May,
As the air around us grows
Chill with Autumn’s onset.

Hold me under The Dome.
Let reflected light
From our Capitol
Fall across your face …
Your fair Southern features
Are of a rustic loveliness
Uncommon in the North.

Let our memories of here
Be as timeless as the marble
As its reflected light
Silhouettes our kiss —
Joined figures
At their Republic’s seat.

Let The District’s ordered streets
Order our hearts,
So that our affections are as well kept
As the old colonial homes.

At the antebellum church
Along Lafayette Park
Let our words ring
Gently round the arches
Where the ghosts of presidents
Will witness my whispered
Vow that I love you.
